The Feldenkrais Method

The Feldenkrais Method is a form of bodywork that uses gentle movements to develop increased flexibility and coordination. Founded by Moshe Feldenkrais, this method combines physics, biomechanics, and an understanding of learning and human development. Though similar to yoga, the Feldenkrais method doesn’t strive for correct positions, but instead aims for more dexterous, painless, and efficient body movements. The goal is to create an awareness and quality of movement through body feedback rather than predefined postures. This form of bodywork makes you more aware of your habits and tensions and allows for you to develop new ways of moving more comfortably, efficiently, and fully.

Functional Integration Sessions

Private sessions of Feldenkrais are known as Functional Integration (FI) lessons. In these sessions, the teacher/practitioner guides an individual in movement through non-invasive touch. The teacher’s touch displays how an individual currently organizes their body and actions. Through gentle touch and movement, the teacher suggests new movement patterns that are more comfortable, efficient and useful for the individual. FI lessons are flexible and can be modified to meet the needs, desires, and intention of the individual.

Awareness Through Movement (ATM) Classes

Feldenkrais group classes are known as Awareness Through Movement (ATM) lessons. Similar to yoga or tai chi, ATM classes use slow, mindful movements to increase strength, flexibility and holistic integration of the body and mind. These classes tie directly into the functional movements of daily life such as walking efficiently, safely lifting objects, and improving posture. Classes are generally 30-60 minutes and may involve walking, standing, sitting and floor exercises as the teacher guides through a sequence of movements. By improving the quality of movement, unnecessary muscle tension in the body can reorganize and release.
